Mejuri 101: Gold Vermeil

If you haven’t noticed, we have a thing for gold vermeil. It’s shiny, it’s got an irresistible French moniker and it makes for a bold and durable stack. Here, Kathleen Newman-Bremang, Deputy Director, Global at Refinery29 Unbothered, and Britt Gelineau, our Senior Manager, Product Marketing take us on a quick deep dive on everything vermeil—from how it’s made to the vermeil pieces you should own and everything in between.

Pronounced “ver-may,” this material is not to be confused with regular gold plating. At Mejuri, vermeil pieces use a much thicker layer of 18k solid gold over sterling silver because we like our stacks golden, bold and durable.

Our gold vermeil is a premium material crafted to last—and superior to gold plating due to its thick layer of 18k gold over sterling silver, which is in and of itself a highly enduring precious metal. In comparison, gold plating is typically a thin layer of gold over a less durable metal such as copper or brass.

Like everything fine, your jewelry deserves some TLC. We created a Jewelry Cleaning Kit to keep all your pieces in top shape, including gold vermeil. Here’s how it works:

1. Using a dry microfiber cloth, like a lens or screen cleaning cloth, wipe down your piece, using light pressure, focusing on any areas of discolouration.

2. Do not apply water or other chemicals to your vermeil or silver pieces to clean them. Our Jewelry Cleaning Spray is specially formulated to be vermeil and silver-safe.
