Ask a Stylist: Allison Bornstein Answers Your Jewelry Questions

From Violette to Katie Holmes, celebrity stylist Allison Bornstein lives by a “look good, feel good” mantra. Her style is simple, irresistible and perfectly harmonious. In other words, she knows a good style equation.

Here, your most pressing jewelry styling questions, broken down and answered by Allison herself.

QUESTION 1

How do I mix gold and silver?

“The way I mix gold and silver (or white gold, for that matter) is choosing one hero color that’ll be your focal point. Let’s say your hero color is gold—use silver as an accent. Mix in a few pieces of silver to add a little texture.”

QUESTION 2

How do you stack without making it look like you’re trying too hard?

“I like to think of my stacks as a little family in the sense that they have something in common and they're similar but can still stand on their own. They can be similar in color, style, shape or material. Here, I stacked by style with the Tube Hoops with the Small Hoops in white gold, plus a gold Mini Hoop as earrings; chain necklaces; and gold bands on my fingers. The styles together make the stack feel consistent and intentional, while still being interesting and exciting.”

"I like to think of my stacks as a little family...the pieces are similar but still stand on their own."

QUESTION 3

How do you mix statement and delicate jewelry?

“With a statement piece, we often feel like we need to have one statement with a bunch of delicate things around it. I think that overshadows the delicate pieces. What I like to do is have two or more statement pieces to complement each other. That way it becomes more of a look, instead of just about a single statement piece.”

“With my necklaces, I love doing a statement pendant necklace with a really delicate chain to create a more cohesive look instead of just one pendant focal point. It's the same with rings. If you pair a chunky ring with more delicate stackers, you’re mostly focusing on the chunky ring. But if you add another bolder piece, it becomes more of a statement”
