How Celebrity Stylist Kate Young Wears Diamonds Every Day

Behind every great celebrity look is, well, Kate Young. The New York-based stylist boasts a client list that includes Margot Robbie, Dakota Johnson, Sienna Miller and Selena Gomez to name just a few. From Cannes to the Oscars (and even the virtual red carpet), Young is no stranger to the dazzling (and dizzying) demands of award seasons, spending most of her days darting between showrooms and ateliers to create the iconic looks she’s known for. But unlike her glamorous clientele, Young actually prefers to stay behind the scenes wearing a uniform of streamlined basics—and very good denim. So how does a red carpet supernova bring a touch of glamour to her everyday look? On a rare off-day, we caught up with Kate in her Brooklyn home to hear about the secret. (Hint: it involves diamonds.)

Describe yourself in 10 words or less.
Wife, mom, daughter, friend, stylist.

How would you describe your personal style?
Classic with a twist. I like basics, but with a weird accessory or something unexpected to make it interesting.

What is your most treasured possession and why?
My engagement ring, because it's a symbol of our relationship and now also our family.

What diamonds do you wear every day?
I love the Eternity Band—it's fancy and sparkly, but simple enough to wear every day. I'm totally in favor of diamonds every day if it's available to you! I don't think you should be too precious about nice things. You have to enjoy treasure—not just keep it locked up.

What other jewelry do you wear every day?
I wear my wedding ring and Eternity Band every day and then I change necklaces and earrings daily. I wear bracelets when I wear a watch, which isn't always, but I like a messy wrist. I like a lot of different sized hoops, some with diamonds and some not—all the same metal. I love a watch, a gold bangle and a string bracelet woven by my son too.

How do you define the word fine?
Real gold.

What are you wearing when you feel your best?
A navy sweatshirt and diamonds.

Fill in the blank: Diamonds are _________.
Forever! I'm a victim of marketing.

What is your jewelry signature?
I think you have to feel good—so whatever works for you. I tend to like a longer necklace because I have a short neck, and I don't like super dangly earrings. I like some rings—but never on my first finger. I don't have reasons for this, it's just what suits me. I think it's really good to have one or two "good" pieces that are always on, they become part of you and can be lucky or grounding. Wear what feels good, jewelry is sensory and tactile—it's about your own feeling.

Describe the last time you invested in yourself?
I meditate every day.

What are you selfish about?
My kids.

Who is your greatest influence?
My husband.

What are the small things that make all the difference in your life?
Pilates with Ashley Richmond, nice jewelry, good underwear.

When’s your *golden hour*?
Dinner with my family.

When do you feel most vulnerable?
When I can't sleep and the rest of the world can.

What’s the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do before you go to sleep?
In the morning: coffee. At night: kiss my husband.
