For Izaak Theo Adu-Watts, Style is a Chance to be Who You Are
For the month of June, we’ll be matching donations to PFLAG Canada, The Trevor Project and Stonewall in support of the LGBTQ2S+ community. Learn more in-stores across the globe.
When it comes to art, Izaak Theo Adu-Watts has never been able to settle on one medium. Be it illustration, printmaking, painting, sculpture, or photography, Adu-Watts has had an appreciation for nature and the world around him, gravitating toward whatever inspires him in the moment. But when it comes to fashion, the principles of style are less interchangeable than they are signature. Often, for Adu-Watts, a “good ole three-piece suit” does the trick.
Of course, the multi-disciplinary creative might cull inspiration from his mother, gold tube hoop icon and singer Sade, but his ‘90s-leaning style encompasses more than just vintage tees; see also: Canadian tuxedos, #OOTD’s ft. electric blue Crocs that may or may not be inspired by his five-year-old self, vintage Dr. Pepper caps, and more. If not a budding music icon of legendary descent, Adu-Watts (who’s already had his turn on major runways) is a style savant in his own right.
Recently, Adu-Watts took our latest Collectibles Collection for a spin. And the result has us wanting to dip more than just our toes in our latest customizable stacking pieces. Read on to get to know Adu-Watts and check out how he made the Collectibles Collection his own (including his must-have styling trick).
Walk us through a day in your life.
In my day-to-day life, I am a husband and father to nine animals, including an eclectus parrot, two dogs and six cats. I work on creating art and spend time with my wife working on our home, living life.
How would you describe your personal style? Who or what has influenced you over the years?
My style reflects what feels comfortable on my body and what makes me feel good… I'm drawn to clothes that excite me—textures, patterns and classics, like a good ole three-piece suit.
Tell us a time where you used fashion and/or accessories to break the rules or do things your own way.
There are no rules in fashion and self-expression. Every day and moment is an opportunity to be who you are.
What does Pride mean to you?
To me, Pride means to live authentically in who you are. To not allow others to define how you live your life. Pride is living your truth.
When it comes to gender and jewelry—what has always been your approach? And what do you think it will take to even further de-gender jewelry?
I have always worn whatever I have been drawn to. I believe that people have to let go of preconceived notions of gender to express themselves freely, to let go of fear and perception, and to experience who they really are.
What are you listening to right now?
Reggae, Afro-beats, Frank Ocean, and Binaural Beats.
Favorite Mejuri piece and why?
The Malachite Drop Charm is my favorite piece because it is a crystal that holds good energy and the color is beautiful.
Bucket list item for summer?
Camping with my wife and dogs; to see the Redwoods and other giant trees.
Your #1 styling rule?
I like to color-coordinate at least two items of clothing.
