How to Make a Statement Like A Londoner

Otegha Uwagba knows a thing or two about crafting a style signature. The bestselling author, culture journalist and podcast host has that inimitable ease that only Londoners seem to posses: an unfussy, yet totally personal way of expressing herself through fashion. Even in a pair of leather pants, a black turtleneck and everyday jewelry—classic gold hoops, included—she manages to look enviably polished every time. She's also unafraid to pull out a rebellious element too, like our new trademark London Dôme Ring, or, (in her words) an unusual pair of shoes.

Describe the development of your personal style. Do you have any style signatures?

I’d describe my personal style as fairly simple. I wear a lot of black, tan and white, and up until recently, I used to steer clear of any sort of patterns, though I’m experimenting a bit more these days!

What works best for me is something quite pared back like a pair of jeans and a black turtleneck. Then accessorizing with a good coat, handbag and a killer pair of shoes. Shoes are probably my style signature—I tend to dress from the feet up.

How do you express yourself through jewelry?

I wear the same pieces of jewelry day in, day out. A pair of plain gold hoops—always on the lookout for the perfect pair—and a gold ring with my initial on it that my mum got for me as a birthday present when I was 10. It was too big for me at the time but it fits perfectly now, so I never take that off. It has a lot of sentimental value.

If I want to dress up a bit, I switch out my gold hoops for something a little more eye-grabbing. Like diamond studs, a statement-making ring or a pair of oversized enamel earrings to add a bit of color.

In what outfit do you feel most like yourself?

High-waisted straight-leg blue jeans, a good knitted top or sweater and a pair of ankle boots (or mules if it’s warmer). That’s my go-to combo and because I know it just ‘works’ for me, I always feel very comfortable in that outfit.

And perfume! I have a few scents that I rotate depending on the seasons. Something heavier and smoky during the winter and more leafy scents in the spring and summer.

How has living in London influenced your style?

I was born in Lagos, Nigeria and moved to London when I was five years old, so I’m a nearly lifelong Londoner. Living in London, I’m constantly observing what other women (and sometimes men) are wearing and taking inspiration from their outfits.

It’s not uncommon for me to chase someone down on the street and ask where they got their shoes or dress from—it’s like a constant catwalk show.

How would you describe London style? Does your style fit into that or stand apart from it?

London style is quite rough and ready I think, whereas I prefer to look quite polished. I prefer clean, minimal looks and try not to over-accessorize. A standout item, like jewelry or a great bag is enough to make an outfit.

In what ways do you rebel or express your individuality through what you wear?

I always try to wear an unusual pair of shoes. A friend of mine constantly jokes that I love ‘ugly’ shoes, which I suppose is quite true. Even though I love heels, I don’t like them to look too feminine or delicate. I love an interesting structural heel, an asymmetrical shoe or a toe loop—any detail that makes a pair of shoes slightly unusual.

Tell us a little bit about your neighbourhood.

I live in Walworth, which is in South London. I’ve only lived here since the start of this year, but I grew up in the area so it feels very familiar. It’s a quiet, residential area and I just love how peaceful it feels. I’m still getting to know the best restaurants and coffee shops, but long walks in Burgess Park when it’s sunny have been a real highlight so far.

What are your favourite things to do and places to go in London?

I love trying out new restaurants and visiting art galleries. I really missed being able to do that during lockdown. At the moment I’ve got the Helen Frankenthaler exhibition at the Gagosian on my to-do list, as I’m a big fan of her work.

Describe your perfect evening out in London.

It would take place entirely in Soho—that’s hands-down my favourite part of central London. I’d have a long leisurely dinner sitting outside at Duck Soup, as their food is incredible and the atmosphere and service there is always on point. Then probably on to Soho House or the Groucho for a nightcap. The latter in particular is great for people-watching and you never know who you’ll bump into.
